Bad at Math

Yesterday I went to get a haircut.  The hairdresser asked how I wanted it cut.  I said what I always say: cut it to a quarter-inch on the sides and back, and to three-quarters of an inch on the top.

She asked what the numbers were, meaning the randomly-assigned numbers shown on the clipper attachments which correspond to the various lengths.  I said I didn’t know, but that I thought the actual lengths in inches were shown on the attachments, too.

She said yes, they were, and she had little trouble finding the quarter-inch attachment.  But after some digging through the attachment bin for the three-quarters attachment, she produced one and showed it to me.  It said "3/8".  I said, "ah... no, it will say ’three over four’ on it."

She said, "I’m really bad at math."

Why don’t you go to a barber?

I can’t think of a single barber shop that I’ve seen in the past 10 or 20 years besides the one in Royersford that we went to as kids.  But there are various haircut/hairdresser chains all over the place.  They’re in my consciousness, so I go to them.

you need to make a "just nuke the world and get it overwith" category to put this in, really.  "sadness" doesn’t cut it anymore.

Maybe I’m thinking too hard here, but I really can’t figure out this girl’s logic. If she could find the one quarter, presumably with a 1/4 on it, and the "quarter" part doesn’t change when she needs a three quarter, how she thought that adding a 3 on the left somehow increases the value of a "quarter".

I think you should send her to Kim’s math class, or if that’s too hard, my cousin will start 2nd grade in the fall.

Yeah.  I think the worst part is the failure to realize that this is reading, not math.
