I’m such a sporadic blogger.

So spring break is going really well, which is to say, I’m getting tons of sleep and a lot of relaxation. John Paul visited me on Sunday-Monday and we hung out, went caving, listened to some fatty DJs, and watched Unbreakable. He showed me this video that was really awesome... it’s 10MB, so basically if you’ve got broadband it’s no problem, and if you don’t then it’s out of the question. Anyway it’s called "Timber" by coldcut... it’s sort of a music video, but not really... so download it.

I rewrote this whole messageboard script from scratch, and wrote it "nicely" with functions and few globals. It’s just about done, and will be online soon, though you might not even notice. But on the backend it’s much nicer and handles messages in a much more logical way, allowing complete style-reformatting without having to modify the content itself. Anyway now that this script is all nice, I’m thinking of offering it for download.

I finally got around to checking out some Norah Jones like I’d been meaning to, and I’m glad I did. Her music is just so pretty. It’s "jazz" which means modern jazz, which is nothing like Louis Armstrong / Duke Ellington jazz of yesteryear that I like so much. Norah Jones isn’t that at all, but that’s a good thing. And her music is beautiful. Butterflies, Come Away With Me, and What Would I Do are my favorites so far.

I think there was more that I wanted to say, and it escapes me now. Oh yes, the 22-foot-wingspan unmanned "drone" aircraft discovered by weapons inspectors in Iraq last weekend, and that Hans ~~"the jellyfish"~~ Blix tried to hide. The one that could potentially deliver chemical and biological payloads. Now it’s one thing for France and the rest of the Weasels to be anti-American. But for the weapons inspectors themselves to be less-than-upfront about their findings is just blatantly biased and unacceptable. If Saddam isn’t a threat, when why do we continue to "find" these weapons, and if "finding" these weapons really is progress then why is Blix trying to cover it up?

What’s a blogger?

I’ve been listening to Norah Jones since her debut first came out. She has such a sweetly mellow voice, and she’s quite hot. I first heard of her through Blue Note, and saw her live once. Blue Note is such a good label for these modern jazz efforts. I’ve been a big fan of them since the US3 days. You should also check out John Scofield, who sounds like a less experimental version of mmw. He also callaborates with those guys quite often. Soulive is nice faster type jazz with some hip-hop elements mixed in sometimes. Karl Denson is real funky too. He plays the sax and flute, which gives the funk tunes he plays a little more jazz. Check them out and let me know what you think.

Blog is short for weblog, and blogging is the act of posting your day-to-day thoughts and happenings to a website. It’s gotten really big in the past 2 years, and the existence of a huge issue that affects the whole world (war) has also fueled it a lot. InstaPundit is one of the oldest and most well-known; some of my favorites are USS Clueless, LinuxArt, CapitalistLion, and most recently Cox & Forkum.

Thanks for all those band names. I downloaded a bunch of songs from each of them and I’m checking them out. My first impressions are: Scofield is maybe too laid-back and uneventful for me, Soulive is cool, and Denson is partly cool and partly really 80s. I need to listen to them all some more though.

Well, I have this song called "Groove On" or maybe it’s "When I Get My Groove On," and it’s totally... maybe 80s isn’t the right word, it’s just super cheesey, like almost disco feeling... the thing is, I have some other tracks that are totally different, like one called "Because of Her Beauty" and it’s a different vocalist. So maybe that "Groove On" one isn’t really him? But I do have 2 (different) copies of it, and it’s the same vocalist on both, and both are labelled Karl Denson. With mp3s you can never be too sure though. But it’s definitely a totally different voice and overall sound from other tracks like Because of Her Beauty, Like Like Dope, Let the Music Take Your Mind...

I’m not sure which tune "Groove on" is. Email it to me so I can check it out. I think most of the tracks you mentioned are from his newest album, "The Bridge", except for Like Like Dope. This album is really different from the last one, "Dance Lesson #2", which has no vocals. He plays with Chris Wood and DJ Logic among others on it, I’m sure you heard Logic’s scratching on Like Like Dope. Also make sure you check out some Soulive from their first album, "Doin Somethin", as it too is really different from their newest. So you listen to older jazz also, huh? That’s cool, the music of the guys you mentioned and others from that era is timeless IMO. Ever listen to Miles Davis? He’s got a ton of albums and went through many differnet musical phases in his career. Chances are you might like something of his, but it might take awhile to find as he has more albums than you can shake a stick at, whatever that means. Are you gonna be home this Sunday? We’re coming over for dinner.

I had a jazz class a few semesters ago and I really liked it -- it was so interesting, and the music was just awesome. I don’t think we covered Miles Davis in any sort of detail. The stuff we studied went up to around the 1950s if I recall correctly, so that would have been just at the start of Davis’ career. But I will have to look into him.

Yeah, I’m going to be home on Sunday... sorry I didn’t reply to your email. Do you know what time you guys are coming over? Mom told me dinner was at 5. It’s supposed to be like 55° on Sunday!
