bibles...

hey all, really weird request here... or at least, it is to me... but i’ll try it anyways, i ummm, finally went to church tonight, was nice, i enjoyed it alot, and think im going to start going every thursday night (its a college group type thing)  and well, I want a bible, and due to the fact that I have a lack of a vehicular mode of transportation, I am wondering if anyone knows a good website to buy a bible at, that maybe uses paypal for payments (not a requirement though), and if so, if you have done any purchasing from there, and any recommendations basically.  thanks

Hey man, sorry for the delayed response... I spent the last 2 days moving home from school... ugh.  I hate moving!

But anyway, I’m actually looking for a bible myself, first of all because mine is sorta falling apart, but also because I want a small one.  Mine is a "normal" size, about 6x9" in its case, and I want one that I can take on weekend hikes and stuff.  I’ve never bought a bible online before (or ever, in fact, since mine was given to me), but I think this is the one I’m going to get.  That’s at amazon.

As far as general recommendations, well, there are lots of different bible versions.  In English, there are basically two types, though: the King James, and the modern versions (NIV, NASB, RSV, etc).  The biggest difference is that the King James is an actual word-for-word translation, meaning that the translators translated the Greek and Hebrew words of the existing bible manuscripts into English words.  This translation technique is called formal equivalence.  The modern versions were "translated" using a method called dynamic equivalence, in which the translators would take a clause or sentence from the Greek/Hebrew, decide what it meant, and then re-write it in English, without necessarily using the same words.  The result is the the modern versions are "easier to read," in some people’s opinions, but they are also fraught with serious problems.  These versions are the translators’ personal interpretation of the bible, instead of the actual words of the bible translated into English.  For that reason, and because of all the problems/errors that resulted from that, I only use the King James bible.  Some people view KJV-only people as nutty fundamentalists, but well, what can I say... I’d rather have the words of God instead of the someone’s interpretation containing the paraphrased ideas of God.

wow, that is a nice bible... i never really paid much attention to which version, as all my bibles were given to me as well.  somehow, along the way though, they have all disappeared, and I don’t like that - i know where one went, and it really ticked me off - my roommate at the time, although i never forced my views onto him (except maybe try to convince him to do something with his life, rather than sit around doing nothing all day) took it and burned it, said he doesn’t believe in the bible, and he was a satanist (which i still don’t believe, just that he has some major problems he has to deal with in his life).  which really saddens me actually, because it was given to me by my pseudo-parents (they took care of me from 15-now) and taught me how to act (well, not taught, but, well, they showed me that... i don’t know, its really hard to explain... but basically, that i could be loved by someone.
