If you live in or around a big city, then Google Maps provides you with high-resolution satellite imagery of your area. But in more rural areas, the available satellite imagery is much lower resolution.
Terraserver on the other hand has always seemed to have high-res photos of nearly everywhere in the US. They may be a little older and in black & white, but it’s better than having no high-res imagery at all. But the problem is that after being introduced to the joy of the Google Maps interface, Terraserver’s boring old interface is such a pain to use.
Enter mapper.acme.com. This site combines Google Maps with the imagery database from Terraserver. Just use the "DOQ" link in the upper right-hand corner.
These are really cool close ups however the maps are very old. When you type in our home address the pointer is right on but Grosser Rd. is the original road with the sharp right then left through that old farm. This was before all the new housing developments along Grosser Rd. But it was fun to see our house and pool al well as seeing YOUR house :)
I know, I was just talking to dad about that yesterday. I checked out Grosser Road too, to see what it looked like without the new developments all along it. I had almost forgotten about the fact that the road used to have that double sharp curve in it. It’s crazy how much that road has completely changed in just 8 years.
That bird’s eye imagery is incredible. With the publicly-available sat photos being that detailed, the stuff they do on 24 is a lot less unbelievable.
As usual it’s starting in the cities; the bird’s eye view is available out to Pottstown but not to Allentown. Beyond that it’s the same older Terraserver imagery from a few years ago.
