Try harder, Jester

Jester, why are you trying to do bad things to my board?  And since when do you call yourself Gillian?  You’re usr5631-kno.cableinet.co.uk / 213.48.236.77 on my site, and the same on pope’s site... and on pope’s site it says your name... oops.

Terrorists like to be vague

People are suddenly upset that president Bush and/or the government "didn’t do anything" in response to vague warnings of possible terrorist activity last August.  Democrat Senator John Edwards said that "There should have been bells and whistles going off" because of the information that US intelligence had available.  The information was: 1) the FBI was suspicious about the number of Arab students enrolling at a flight school in Phoeniz, AZ, and they made reference to a possible connection to Osama bin Laden; 2) the arrest of a suspected terrorist in Minnesota; and 3) a report given to president Bush explaining Osama bin Laden’s past terrorist attacks.  Now the media (and others, like Sen. Edwards) are running around saying things like "why didn’t we do anything to prevent the attacks?"

Nothing could have been done to predict the attacks.  The intelligence did not contain specific information about an attack; namely, it did not indicate a date, location, or method of attack.  And even if we did suspect that someone would fly a plane into a building, there isn’t anything that we can do about that.  We can’t shut the nation down.  If we did, for example, shut down the airlines in August in response to these "warning signs," what good would that have done?  First of all, the attacks didn’t occur until September, and second, we would just have to open them right back up again, unless we planned on waiting for the terrorists to come out and say "ok, you win, we were going to fly some planes into buildings but since you shut the airlines down, we can’t, so now, you can open them up and we’ll cancel our plans."

When the public hears this news now, they think "see?  The FBI knew that Osama bin Laden was up to something!"  But the public had no idea who that person was 8 months ago.  The only reason "bells and whistles" might go off now is that now we KNOW that Osama bin Laden flew some planes into some buildings.  Before that, hearing the name Osama bin Laden would certainly not set off any bells and whistles.

It’s not uncommon for our country or any country to receive threats.  And it’s certainly not in the best interest of the nation to inform the public of every single threat of possible terrorist activity.  It wouldn’t provide any safety, it wouldn’t predict or prevent any attacks, it would cause the public to get worked up and live in fear, and it would reveal our intelligence to any possible attackers.

Murder as an alternative to responsibility and self-control

Just read this in a news article:

"Gandy only briefly discussed abortion during her speech, telling those in attendance that if too many conservative federal judges were appointed, their rulings would weaken laws protecting the environment, civil rights, and women’s reproductive rights, particularly abortion. "

I’d just like to point out that technically speaking, murder is not a "reproductive right."  How pathetic and selfish and self-deceiving people can be.

Brandtson and Joshua Rock!

I saw Brandtson, Joshua, and The Rocking Horse Winner at the Chameleon in Lancaster tonight.  Brandtson was super, I was going nuts, and so were they, but the crowd was just standing still.  I hate crowds like that.  Joshua were also really jamming.  I like The Rocking Horse Winner, but I wasn’t really impressed with their performance.  It was at least partly because of the mix... her vocals were too loud and piercing, and personally I thought the bass and guitar were too loud too.  But I have their first CD and I really like it.  (She’s the female vocalist you hear on Dashboard Confessional’s album "The Places...".)

Insane Appalacian Trail Hike

Got back today from an insane hiking/camping trip on the Appalachian Trail.  It was me and my brother Brian, and our friends Chris, Jason and Josh.  We started around 9pm Thursday near Palmerton, PA (right at the intersection of 873, 145, and 248, at a place called "Weiders Crossing") and finished in Delaware Water Gap, PA at noon Sunday.  That’s 36 miles in ~2.5 days.  It was easily the most physically challenging thing I’ve done to date.

The start of the trail is a 1000-foot climb over one mile, so it’s pretty steep.  My pack was 48 pounds.  But we were blessed in that it didn’t rain except for a little drizzle, and it wasn’t windy (yet).  So we hiked up the mountain, covered a total of one mile, and camped.  What’s interesting about this night is we camped on the open face of the mountain.  The view was spectacular, but the openness meant crazy wind.  There were only about 30 or 40 little trees where we camped, and they were all bent over a little.  It was so windy that most of us couldn’t sleep from the noise.  Brian didn’t have tent stakes, so he had to set up 2 big tarps between trees and camp in the V formed by them, or else he’d have blown away during the night, for sure.  I would estimate that the wind was gusting 40~50 miles per hour.  It was just nuts.

Friday was still really windy, but it calmed down as the day progressed.  You could tell that it was always really windy there, because the area looked like a complete wasteland.  For a couple miles there was nothing but lots of short dead trees, and rocks.

The reason the hike was so difficult was that 90% the trail was complete rocks.  Not little driveway-stone type rocks, but rocks big enough that you have to carefully place every step.  Since we did 14 miles each on Friday and Saturday, we grew to hate these rocks.  When you’re just walking on ground, you step, and your leg muscles get to rest for part of each step.  But walking on rocks, your muscles must be constantly tensed because you have to balance your body (and pack) weight differently depending on the rocks your foot lands on.  The bottom line is that walking 14 miles like that is exhausting.

I had a great time on this trip, but I would definitely not hike this particular stretch of trail ever again.  I mean... well, it would take a lot of money, at least.  Pennsylvania has the second rockiest Appalachian Trail terrain, next to Maine.  As Brian put it, if you were hiking the whole AT from Maine to Georgia, you would surely take a car around Pennsylvania.

Unfortunately, I left my camera behind to save 2 pounds, which I immediately regretted.  But Brian took a bunch of photos, and I’ll put them up here as soon as they’re developed and scanned.  (UPDATE: Brian’s photos are online.)
