Women vs. God

Oh, man. I hate this. Even though it isn’t her fault in even the most remote way, I still want to blame her for this. Every time I meet a girl this happens! Well, I would say let me explain before I start to ramble, but to late for that.

(Intermission)

Now, on to the explaination. A while back, I made a promise with God not to date any girl that wasn’t a Christian. Mainly, He told me to stop dating for fun and to only date to find HER. (You know what I mean. Corny, but, hey, you can’t ignore God) So of course, my wife would have to be Christian for it to work.

So, anyway, in two weeks of my college life I have met this beautiful, smart, funny girl named Sara in my Religion class. Also, another bonus was the fact that she was a straight-edge like me. AKA goody-goody. So, I decided, ’heck, might as well ask’. So I did. I asked, "So, are you a Christian?" I knew that she went to church and everything, but now-a-days that doesn’t me squat. Here is her reply...

"Yes..."

(Inner me) ’YESSSS!’

"...kinda. I go to church and all, but that’s pretty much because I grew up with it..."

Nooooooooo!!!!! Why, why, why, why!!!!????

Well, I guess I should look at the bright side. At least I made a new friend that I can bring to Christ... I guess.

(Yeah, so I’m pouting. So what? Shut up)

I really enjoyed your style of writing. You are right, in order to find Her, and for it to work, she needs to be Christian. You’ll find her. God is still here, looking over all of us. (By the way, that decision you made was I’m sure not easy, but I really want to say that it is a strong one, and probably towards the right direction).

That definitely stinks, man.  But you’re right about needing to not date non-Christians.  As you said, the purpose of dating is to find the person you’ll marry, and only a fool would marry someone who has a fundamentally different belief system than their own.  And for Christians in particular, the bible is full of instances where God forbad his people to take wives from among other faiths.  And of course, second Corinthians says "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?"

But hey, at least, you’re MEETING girls, and at least they’re sorta-almost saved... you seem to be on the right track.  As opposed to me, for instance.

Don’t want to make it sound like I am living vicariously through you guys, but I can’t help comparing my past experiences with what you guys write and I end up with some regrets.  My life prior to marriage was missing christian fellowship.  I grew up Catholic and didn’t actually join a Christian Church until after I got married.  And now I know what I have been missing.  But, I can thank God ernestly and plentifully that I have it now!

It’s awesome that things worked out that way for you, Patrick.  So are you saying that you started attending a Christian church because of your wife?  (I ask because my response assumes that’s what you meant.)

Of course, nothing is impossible for God, but one can’t expect God to bring one’s spouse to the truth after getting married.  There’s no guarantee of that.  I think that’s why you’ll sometimes hear Christians say that "evangelical dating" is a bad idea, and I have to agree.  It could turn out OK, but it might not, and I think the risk for the believer is too great.  And I think the scripture I mentioned supports this point of view.

But YMMV.  (Or rather, it did vary, apparently.)  I guess it goes to show that God can take care of us no matter what.

Yeah, but she’s still cute...

Sorry I am getting back to your reply so late.

Yes, God has blessed me abundantly.  But keep in mind, I did sit in Catholic Mass every Sunday praying to God for answers.  And I tried all the activities that the Catholic church had to offer (worship, choir, bible study, evening fellowship).  So when I met my wife to be, she could see that I was patient and receptive to what God had for me.

And yes, we have people at our church who attend without their spouse.  I don’t get that?  What is your excuse not to spend time at church?  You think you have something better to do?  Besides, we have so much fun there, I find myself going during the week whenever I get time to see if I can help out with anything.
