If you’re using Internet Explorer -- which you shouldn’t be, because you should be using Firefox -- then you should upgrade to the new version (7) that was just recently released. You can get IE7 from microsoft.com.
Unless you use Access databases with html pages. I found this out the hard way, as I updated my IE at work, and then the databases would not work. I had to roll back to version 6. Ah yes, good old microsoft. There is a known conflict with these two and we also got a warning from PTC that Pro Engineer does not like IE7. We had to install a script file to stop our PCs from auto-updating to IE7.
Ah, yeah. Unfortunately if your webmasters’/vendors’ idea of programming is to write code that only works in one specific version of one specific browser, then you have no choice but to stick with that (old, insecure, and buggy) browser.
Are you implying IE7 is secure and bug-free?
I wish I were. Unfortunately IE is such a festering disaster(*) that the browser team of the most powerful software company in the universe couldn’t fix all the bugs in it in the ~year they worked on v7. But there have been many important fixes, including security fixes and longstanding rendering issues (support for PNG transparency, for :hover on non-link elements, and a whole raft of other CSS issues, to name some of the ones that have made my job as a web developer miserable).
(*) To be fair, IE can’t take all the blame for this; the Windows mess contributes to the sorry state of IE because of how tightly integrated into Windows IE is.
