Apple

Every day I hate Apple a little more. (I know... and you thought I already hated them as much as possible.)

Why do I have to pay $300 for an adapter to use an Apple LCD on a VGA video card? Why does the nohup command fail to log output if I run it in the background? Why does the entire system lock up if I use any part of the GUI while fscking a partition?

And another thing: OSX’s auto-update feature is retarded in its handling of security updates. If you have 200 updates applicable to your system, it downloads and applies them one or two at a time, requiring a reboot after each one or two. So it literally takes all day to bring an old system up-to-date -- not because there’s actually that much updating to do, but because the process is retarded and you spend 90% of the time rebooting.

Add RAM and upgrade to 10.3? You should be able to skip most of that patching. After going to 10.3, I believe I have only installed 4 patches.

I am trying to get Xfree86 running on my Mac to run some of the more popular programs (mostly for Open Office).

Our site license allows us to upgrade to 10.3 for "free" (i.e. we already paid for it), but for the average user with a normal end-user license, it stinks to have to pay $130 or whatever to upgrade to 10.3, especially just to work around the brain-dead auto-update feature.

But anyway, in our case, this nonsense started after we upgraded to 10.3. This morning we ran the upgrade, and then spent the rest of the day rebooting over and over as it downloaded more updates.

Haven’t tried to get X running on a Mac yet.

Didn’t expect you to have to go through that after upgrading to 10.3. Doesn’t quite sound right.

FYI: just read an article stating there is NO SPYWARE/ADWARE known that is written for OS X. I have been running virus/spyware free for a year and a half. My wife keeps talking about buying an upgrade and giving this "old" unit to the kids. 1.2 GHz imac G4 with 17" screen! I was never spoiled like this as a kid. I was cutting my teeth on a TRS-80 with cassette tape storage to save my BASIC programs.
